“The Prisoner of Sex.” Harper’s, March, 41–46, 48, 50, 52–60, 62-66, 68–72, 77–92; cover story. Essay. This 50,000 word analysis of the Women’s Liberation movement, which occupies almost the entire issue and sold out in nine days, was contributory to the resignation of Harper’s editor Willie Morris and Mailer’s separation from the magazine. Rpt: In a revised book form under the same title (71.20). See 71.11–71.13, 71.21 for contemporaneous comment, and Willie Morris’s New York Days (New York: Little Brown, 1993) for a retrospective discussion.
