“Mailer Clarifies His ‘Fifth Estate.’” Article by unidentified writer. New York Times, 7 February, 45. On 6 February, the day after he had proposed “The Fifth Estate,” Mailer called a news conference to say that he regretted calling his proposed organization “a people’s police.” He went on to compare “The Fifth Estate” with the American Civil Liberties Union, Common Cause and Nader’s Raiders.
