“Mailer’s Guests ($50 a Couple) Hear His Plan on ‘Secret Police.’” Article by Mel Gussow. New York Times, 6 February, 23. Report on Mailer’s 5 February 50th birthday party at the Four Seasons restaurant in New York at which he announced “The Fifth Estate,” a “democratic secret police” to keep tabs on the FBI and the CIA. Five hundred people attended, including many members of Mailer’s family. The magazine Counter-Spy (see 75.4) was one of the fruits of the effort. See 73.373.8, 73.10, 73.11, 73.18, 74.6, 75.6.
