Squib in the “People” section of Time, 6 November. Quotes Mailer, speaking at a rowdy University of California at Berkley event at which someone threw a burning jockstrap on the stage, as saying, “A little bit of rape is good for a man’s soul.” He is also reported to have said that “[Democratic presidential candidate George] McGovern is the only man superior to me,” which Mailer complained about in a letter to Time as being taken out of context.
