“Mailer: New Book Gets Shock Reactions.” Article-interview by Sandy Hoefler. State Journal-Register (Springfield, Ill.), 23 April. Report on a press conference at Sangamon State University (now University of Illinois, Springfield). Mailer noted that Ancient Evenings (83.18) “received my best and worst reviews….It helps to have a firm ego in such a situation.”
