“A Statement of Aims by the Playwright.” Village Voice, 5 January, 16. Paid advertisement of 161 words on the meaning of The Deer Park: A Play (67.13). Mailer says, it is “a play about sex . . . Hollywood and hypocrisy and artistic integrity, about memory and reality, love, snobbery, sorrow, manic will, farce and tragedy.” The version of this statement prefacing the working scripts of the play reads: “a play about fucking.”
