Mailer also reveals that his three self-interviews of the early 60s came out of his effort to write a biography of Picasso:

“ I started to write and thought I would go in for an introductory chapter on questions of form and function, and before I got done I spent the entire summer writing a dialogue between an imaginary interviewer and myself. It was influenced completely by Picasso. ”
