While attending the Edinburgh book festival, Mailer attacked the disparity of wealth in America, and the complicity of Pres. Clinton: “That was his crime, he never got down to the basic question which was the wealth in America was getting to be too divided. The wealthy were getting wealthy and the poor were getting poorer.” Asked about Clinton turning the presidency into a soap opera, he said, “I was the first to say the America President was the first soap opera star of America, and I said it many, many years ago,” referring to his 1960 essay, “Superman Comes to the Supermarket.” (60.9).
