Quotes Mailer’s comments on the Iraq War at a 22 February luncheon at the home of Stanley Sheinbaum in Los Angeles: “We’re in a pre-fascist atmosphere here in America.” Continuing, he said that the White House zealots shouldn’t be taken too seriously: “Jesus is half their soul. Evel Knievel is the other half. An average American with a deep Christian faith is an oxymoron.”
