“Mailer’s Young Hitler Novel Angers Germans.” Article-interview by Jess Smee. Guardian, 29 January. Mailer’s Hitler novel was criticized by the vice president of Germany’s influential Central Council of Jews, Salomon Korn, who said “art will never achieve and understanding” of Hitler. Mailer denied that he used Hitler’s background to explain the extermination of the Jews, calling such a claim, “cheap and hateful.”
