They key to Sergius’ [O’Shaugessy][1] character which I have avoided all through The Deer Park is that he a Catholic. How else account for his impotence, his lust for Lulu, and his fleeing the world.

  1. ↑ The narrator of The Deer Park, Sergius is veteran U.S. Air Force pilot who flew combat mission in Korea. After his discharge, he settles in Desert D’Or, where he has an affair with movie star Lulu Meyers.
