Precise speech appeals only to those who know what is being talked about, and are interested. The cliché, while it repels many people, actually has appeal across a vast spectrum. Precisely because it contains may meanings, and each can put into the cliché large portions of his own experience, the demagogue always speaks in clichés. I, as an intellectual demagogue, probably do no more generally than reinvigorate intellectual clichés. Man, am I down on myself today.
