The aggressive instinct, the destructive instinct, anger, rage, the furies of the unconscious, etc. etc. may all be myths. The id may contain no such things at all. They may be created in man because of his pain at how fantastic and unreasonable the world is. The idea of them is the greatest aid for maintaining society, for if everyone knew that really there is no terror to the unconscious, only peace and bliss and wide love, then men would live freely and society would disappear.
