The big novel could be called Antacid Analgesic.[1]

- ↑ It is unclear if Mailer understood how and why these two drugs are combined in medicines such as Alka-Seltzer, the antacid protecting the stomach from the pain-killing ingredients in the analgesic. It is likely that he conceived of the drugs as opposed in ways that mimic the struggle between soul and society that he elaborates on throughout “Lipton’s.”
