Dear Mann Rubin,[1]

Well, your letter confirmed the little messages I was getting in my dreams, and so I got to work on my agent, who’s gotten to work on Warner’s, and that of course accomplished wonders, you bet. Now I hear they’ve got Janet Leigh playing Cherry.[2] Someday they will do the life of Jennie Grossinger, and Tuesday Weld will sit on Natalie Wood’s head long enough to grind the kasha in the second reel. Well, Mann, when you come to New York, give me a ring and we will commiserate—UL 58966.

Yours in show biz,
Norman Mailer

Notes

  1. Rubin wrote the first screenplay for An American Dream, one that was altered considerably by Warner Brothers. For example, the setting was changed to Los Angeles.
  2. Janet Leigh did indeed play Cherry.
