- ↑ Mailer met Herbert Aptheker (1915 – 2003), a blacklisted communist intellectual and historian of African Americans in the U.S., through mutual friends associated with Dissent, a leftist, anti-communist journal launched in 1954. Mailer served on its editorial board for over 20 years.
