'''Ezra Cappell''' holds a joint appointment at the College of Charleston as Professor of Jewish Studies and Professor of English. Prior to this appointment, Dr. Cappell was Professor of English and Director of the Inter-American Jewish Studies Program at the University of Texas at El Paso. Dr. Cappell holds degrees from NYU (M.Phil and Ph.D.) as well as City College (M.A.) and Queens College (B.A.). His publications include ''American Talmud: The Cultural Work of Jewish American Fiction'' (SUNY Press, 2007) and a co-edited volume (with Jessica Lang): ''Off the Derech: Leaving Orthodox Judaism in the Modern World'' (SUNY Press, 2020).  
Cappell received his B.A. in English from Queens College (CUNY), his M.A.
in Creative Writing from The City College (CUNY), and his M.Phil. and Ph.D.
in English and American Literature from New York University. Cappell teaches
and publishes in the fields of 20th Century and Contemporary Jewish American Literature and he is a recipient of the University of Texas Regents’ Outstanding
Teaching Award. He has published numerous articles on American and Jewish
American writing and he is the author of the book, ''American Talmud: The Cultural Work of Jewish American Fiction'', and he is co-editor of the forthcoming book, ''Off the Derech: Post-Orthodox Jewish Writing''. Cappell is a frequent lecturer on Jewish
American culture and Holocaust writing and he serves as Editor of the SUNY Press
Book Series in Contemporary Jewish Literature and Culture.
