Herbert A.[1] said of Lipton’s—“I think it may return one to a state close to the infant’s where reaction-time is increased, and the senses swim in a peculiar mixture of passivity and exceptional alertness.”

note

  1. Mailer met Herbert Aptheker (1915 – 2003), a blacklisted communist intellectual and historian of African Americans in the U.S., through mutual friends associated with Dissent, a leftist, anti-communist journal launched in 1954. Mailer served on its editorial board for over 20 years.
