Medicine may be witchcraft as fully as psychoanalysis. There is still no understanding of why the germ flourishes in this human and not in that at any moment. To say that the resistance is low is merely a fancy, societal, and untruthful way of describing X. But the idea of “germs” accomplishes much—including other things, it gives intellectual backing to the sexual inhibitions which society must generate to protect itself and its emphasis on progress.
