'''Mashey Bernstein''' has written on Mailer since completing his Ph.D. on him in 1977, examining Jewish aspects of Mailer’s work. Over the years, he wrote many academic articles on Mailer as well as on the friendship that developed between them. Bernstein retired in 2015 from the University of California, Santa Barbara where he taught in the Writing Program and the Film and Media Studies department. Raised an orthodox Jew in Dublin, Ireland, Mailer called Mashey his “Irish Rabbi.
