Today is L plus 1—some Lipton’s, one Seconal,[1] and two bouts of love. But the lift is not tremendous today mainly I think because I took it too soon after the last time. Still, I’m not depressed either, and in reading over the last fifty pages of the journal I find many interesting, even fascinating things buried in the general incoherence.

note

  1. Brand name for Secobarbital sodium, a barbiturate used as a sedative and anticonvulsant. Mailer used this drug regularly in the early and middle 1950s.
