This portrait of Mailer’s friend, comprised of excerpts from Lennon’s interviews with Jones’s family and friends, including four with Mailer, are taken from those done for “James Jones: From Reveille to Taps,” a 60-minute documentary produced by Lennon and Jeffrey Van Davis for Sangamon State University (now University of Illinois, Springfield). It appeared on PBS in 1985 and 1986.
