“Mailer’s ‘Maidstone’: Where’s the Reality?” Transcript of a conversation Mailer had with an audience at the Rochester Institute of Technology in the fall of 1972, with an introduction to the printed version by Penny Cousineau. Afterimage, March, 7–9. Mailer lays out his film aesthetic, and also notes that he had not realized until he read the reviews that “people who were bored with me to start with were in pain after an hour of watching me on the screen,” because, as Andrew Sarris noted, Mailer is not a matinee idol.
