“Mailer Enthralls ‘U’ Students, But Rates Performance as ‘Fair.” Article-interview by Mike Steele. Minneapolis Tribune, 6 March 1968, 17. Report of a press conference following his speech at the St. Paul campus of the University of Minnesota. Mailer had said in his speech that he was neither a protestor nor a Gandhian nonviolent resister, and was asked how then he described himself. He said, “I do things that make sense to me as they come up. I don’t worry about consistency, only the internal consistency of myself. General attitudes of consistency have no relation to reality. People who are anti-Communist all the time or pro-civil disobedience all the time are in danger of becoming totalitarian.”
