“PEN Congress Ends with a Protest.” Article by Edwin McDowell. New York Times, 18 January, 11. Another article on the issue of underrepresentation of women on PEN Congress panels. Mailer, who was both praised and criticized for his work in organizing the conference, called for a vote on removing him: “the votes were solidly in his favor.” Mailer, Erica Jong, Nadine Gordimer and Cynthia Macdonald (a PEN executive board member) are quoted. See 85.1, 85.2, 85.6, 85.8, 85.9 and 1986 entries.
