“Mercy, LIU Graduates Warned of threat of Self-Expression.” Article by Michael Sweeney. Gannett Westchester Newspapers, 4 June, A5. Summary of Mailer’s 3 June commencement address to the graduates of Mercy College and Long Island University’s Westchester campus. He warned the graduates against self-pity, calling it “the most corrosive human emotion known to man or woman. It inspires human sympathy for no one else. It merely diminishes the person carrying it.” Mailer was awarded an honorary doctorate of letters by Mercy College.
