“An Evening with Mailer.” Article-interview by Max Baker. (Springfield, IL) State Journal-Register Weekend Journal, 29 April, 10A-13A. Interviewed after giving a reading in Springfield, Mailer reflected on the Jack Abbott affair: “A young talented man lost his life. A talented man who had been in jail for 20 years went right back to jail and is now in fear of his life. Others lost respect for me, and I lost respect for myself. I thought, finally, that I have acted a little like a dilettante.”
