“Norman Mailer Meets Middle Age and Wins with a Knockout Book.” Article-interview by Jan Herman. Show, Sunday Chicago Sun-Times, 14 October, 1, 14. More interview than article, Herman’s piece quotes Mailer at length on his ambitions, work schedule and the style employed in The Executioner’s Song (79.14): “This book was a reaction against my last books. I felt I was getting into filigree much too much. I’m not turning on the old style. It’s just that it’s a very dangerous style because you have to have an awful lot to say and you have to be centrally located.” Rpt: As “Up Off the Canvas, with a Troubled Look Ahead,” Philadelphia Inquirer, 25 October, Sec. D, pp. 1, 4.
