Knox was blacklisted during the McCarthy era, and he subsequently moved to Paris and Rome to find work. Knox’s screenwriter credits, where he adapted approximately 150 Italian and French into English translations, include the English adaptation of Sergio Leone’s ''The Good, the Bad and the Ugly''. As a dialogue director, he coached many non-English speaking actors in performing convincingly in the English language.
