In his evocative three-page foreword, Mailer calls Pabst’s 45 photographs of this empty (and later razed) resort hotel in the Berkshires “the spookiest book of photographs I have seen,” and “one of the more eloquent.” He also makes the claim that “in searching for the occult, a photograph can be of more use than a painting.”
