On the occasion of a lecture at Congregation New Tamid in Rancho Palos Verdes, Cal., Mailer spoke with Barker about his life as a writer. He said he was more than 1,000 pages into Harlot’s Ghost (91.26) and explained, “When I’m writing a novel, I work at least 200 days a year, maybe 250. I write about five or six pages a day.”
