“Norman Mailer.” Interview by Carole Wagner Mallory. Elle, January, 36, 38–40. Brief interview notable for Mailer’s explanation of PEN’s opposition to the 1952 McCarran-Walter Act, which denies entry into the U.S. to people who have participated in subversive acts, or associated with those who have. He also states that he is “a northern spirit. My name’s Norman, which means northman….Palm trees always leave my stomach feeling flat.” See 85.1, 85.2, 85.6, 85.8, 85.9 and later 1986 entries.
