“Mailer Says He Took Risk in Book about Gilmore.” AP wire story, 28 October. Mailer said he was on Gilmore’s side concerning his wish to be executed “because he wanted it so much. I’m a great believer in the right to die.” He said he thought the book (79.14) would be easier to write: “I felt like a dentist who starts putting in a filling and finds he has to redo the jaw.”
