John J. Winters

John J. Winters has been a reporter, editor, and freelance writer since the early 1990s, and is the author of Sam Shepard: A Life (Counterpoint Press, ). For more than a decade he has been an adjunct faculty member at Bridgewater State University in his native Massachusetts, and Roger Williams University in Providence, R.I. He also devotes his time to teaching college classes inside the Rhode Island prison system. His writing has appeared in Playboy, Men’s Health, Runner’s World, The Boston Globe (where he was a regular correspondent from -), The Providence Journal, Rhode Island Monthly magazine, Salon, and other publications and websites. For many years he was a primary commentator and book reviewer and arts writer for WBUR, Boston’s National Public Radio affiliate. He is currently at work on a biography of the novelist James Salter.
