“It Happened Last Night.” Column by Earl Wilson. New York Post, 2 February. Provides a description of a party at Mailer’s Brooklyn Heights apartment after the opening of his play, The Deer Park (67.13), attended by approximately 500, including José Torres, Betsy Von Furstenburg, Artie Shaw, Budd Schulberg, and Monique Van Vooren. Mailer said that he and Capote are thieves for taking money for writing: “He’s a bigger thief than I am. He’s like Hertz and I’m like Avis.”
