[[Norman Mailer|Mailer]], who was elected American PEN president by acclamation on 12 January, defended the presence of Secretary of State Shultz on the opening day of the Congress. Shultz was greeted by a public letter signed by 65 of the 700 writers (from 40 countries) attending the conference, including E.L. Doctorow, Susan Sontag, Galway Kinnell, John Irving and Elizabeth Hardwick. A number of writers defended Mailer, including Gay Talese, John Kenneth Galbraith and Kurt Vonnegut. Mailer told the meeting that no applicant from overseas had been denied permission to attend by the U.S. State Department.
