“Mailer’s Guests ($50 a Couple) Hear His Plan on ‘Secret Police.’” Article by Mel Gussow. &amp;#039;&amp;#039;New York Times&amp;#039;&amp;#039;, 6 February, 23. Report on [[Norman Mailer|Mailer]]’s 5 February 50th birthday party at the Four Seasons restaurant in New York at which he announced “The Fifth Estate,” a “democratic secret police” to keep tabs on the FBI and the CIA. Five hundred people attended, including many members of Mailer’s family. The magazine &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Counter-Spy&amp;#039;&amp;#039; (see [[75.4]]) was one of the fruits of the effort.
